Is the Horse and Carriage Due for a Comeback?
I have been driving a car for most of my life, and in general I used to find the experience very enjoyable.
Sadly, these days that is no longer the case. Roads are too congested and even on the few roads that aren’t congested, there are so many speed cameras that driving has now become stressful experience and average speed now slower than it was 30 years ago.So why can’t we go back to using horses? They are far more environmentally friendly than the internal combustion engine, and in normal circumstances can probably keep up the same or better average speed. You can still get hold of useful horse carriages and driving harnesses and there are plenty of interesting horse carts that can carry 2 to 4 people. Keeping a horse would probably work out cheaper than running a decent sized family car once you factor in depreciation. The only real problem I can see is parking. I mean, you can hardly take your horse and cart into a multistory car park and leave it for the afternoon, can you? Having said that, surely there could be an opportunity to bring back horse drawn taxi cabs in major cities.
