Many years ago a native Indian tribe made the area surrounding the falls their home and among them was a beautiful maiden, the daughter of the tribe’s chief. While she loved another, her father promised her in marriage to a brave from another tribe and banished her true love from the tribe. Heartbroken that she would be forced to marry another and never see her love again she jumped from the falls in a desperate attempt to end her misery. The chief named the falls in honor of his daughter and they have been known as such from that time on. Today, Noccalula Falls are one of the most popular attractions in the state. The surrounding park also includes botanical gardens, a petting zoo and a train.
