Tip #1

Try avoiding the chocolate, cola drinks, peppermints, and alcohol as they tend to irritate the lower sphincter and cause acid reflux.  Fatty foods and smoking can also cause the problem, which can humorously be alleviated at times by chewing gum.  Since the gum creates more saliva to offset the acid in the esophagus you are effectively battling the acid that is trying to travel back up your system.

Tip #2

Many have felt the complication of liquid entering the lungs, commonly referred to as aspiration.  If you have aspiration it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are suffering from GERD, but if you have GERD it is probable that you suffer from aspiration.  Aspiration pneumonia can be a serious condition that will require the immediate care and treatment of a doctor.  If it isn’t aspiration pneumonia then it could result in an eventual scarring of the throat, or fibrosis, that damages the lungs.  Aspiration generally occurs at night when acid reflux is at its worst without the assistance of gravity.

Tip #3

One of the biggest mistakes people with acid reflux make is eating late in the evening.  In fact, doctors suggest that those who suffer with night time acid reflux or indigestion should not eat up to three hours before they plan to go bed.

Tip #4

Not every person who suffers from acid reflux has a hiatal hernia, but most who have a hiatal hernia do suffer from acid reflux.  The effect of a hiatal hernia on acid reflux is not known for sure, but it is generally assumed that hiatal hernias do have something to do with gastroesophageal reflux disease.  It is important to understand how the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, relates to the condition called acid reflux because a hiatal hernia does affect the LES, which in turn causes acid reflux.

Tip #5

Keep a food diary to track everything you eat and drink if you suffer from acid reflux as diet plays a part in generating stomach acid, and if the acid levels are managed and kept low then you are less likely to experience the reflux.

I remember it like it was yesterday, my mom had to call an ambulance because she thought my father was having a heart attack. He had been suffering with a pain in his arm and fingers and there was a lot of numbness. To her these were all the signs that she had read about for a heart attack.
